![]() The data here was gathered using a CoProcessing module which loaded up ParaView, dumped the information from the status and maps files, then quit. Now that we have some tools at our disposal to try and figure out where our memory is going, let's look at ParaView itself. ![]() On 32 bit machines, this is gap is instead 4 KB since the address space is at a much higher premium. On a 64 bit x86 machine, each library uses 2MB for this buffer which seems like a lot until you realize that the memory is never actually realized in silicon (since any use causes a segfault) and 64 bit machines have access to at least 256TB of virtual memory to play with (and can be extended to the full 16EB if the need ever arises). This memory is used to help catch buffer overflows from trampling over the code and to assist in aligning memory to ease sharing across processes and are created by the binutils toolchain to separate the code section ( r-xp) from the writeable data section ( rw-p) in shared libraries. The oddball one is that one " -p" sections which is pretty large (two megabytes). The " r-xp", " rw-p", and " r-p" pages are fairly standard (executable code, writeable memory, and read-only data memory). The other field which interests us is the second one which is the permission bits for that section of memory. The first two should be fairly obvious, but the other two are created by the kernel and those are the pages where the code which actually talks to the kernel lives. Other things to take note of are the special, ,, and sections. After that, it's mostly the C library and the linker which are unavoidable for the most part. We can see here that the vast majority is that /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive file (which we can avoid see below). ![]() To find out how much memory ParaView is causing a process to consume, I used a small CoProcessing module and modified it to initialize ParaView and then print out its accounting information from /proc/self/status and /proc/self/maps.įirst, looking at the status file, we see something like (trimmed for brevity): Information on other files may be found in the proc(5) manpage. The maps file contains a list of all of the memory regions mapped to a process, their permissions, and what file they come from. The status file contains things like memory usage, historical memory usage, signal masks, capabilities, and more. Here, the two files which are important to us are the status and maps files. This filesystem is implemented with a little bit of kernel knowledge and magic to allow you to introspect what is going on in a process. On Linux, there is a filesystem called procfs mounted at the /proc directory. But what is actually taking up all of this memory when the build artifacts only take up a total of 150MB? To find out, we need to dig into how a kernel (specifically, Linux here) does its memory accounting.įirst, I'll go over the methods used to find out memory usage and what is using it. In a CoProcessing module, just loading up ParaView shoots your virtual memory space up by 500MB. When loading it up to use for handling data on a super computer, its memory footprint seem to be gargantuan. It includes over 3 million lines of C and C++ code and 250,000 lines of Python with a smattering of other languages such as FORTRAN, Tcl, and Java (accoring to the wonderful sloccount tool) in its build, and the build has more than 18,000 things to do when Python bindings are enabled. ![]() You'll find it dependable and logical because it was created using Serato DJ Pro technology. Steel Assault looks and plays like an old 16-bit mascot platformer, and, personally, it reminded me of a GBA game. You play as Taro Takahashi, a soldier armed with a mean energy whip and zipline, out to defeat the evil General Magnus Pierce and his band cybernetic malcontents from taking over the world-which already appears to be in a post-apocalyptic age. Even though it’s fun and inventive, it also toes the line between difficult and frustrating. Many of these artists had worked on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games. Originally, the project meant to follow a late 8-bit era aesthetic (late NES), but the game's artistic direction changed soon after the Kickstarter campaign due to the previous experience from the artists that joined the project. The project was first announced on Kickstarter in early 2015. ![]() In early 2046, Magnus Pierce's soldiers started collecting and refurbishing old nuclear, military, and robotic tech, and they started restoring the power grids of various abandoned cities which they now occupied. Taro grew up to be a core member of the Daybreak Resistance, an insurgency led by Hans Albrecht and Sonia Singh. His regime began a large-scale purge of all its real and suspected enemies, including protagonist Taro Takahashi's parents. Magnus Pierce, a famous inventor and roboticist turned army general, rose to rule over the ashes. The game takes place in an overgrown post-apocalyptic America, after all major American cities were abandoned due to mass radiation attacks in the late 2030s. The game has different difficulty modes, including an Arcade Mode in which there are no checkpoints and the player has only a single life. Taro mainly fights robotic enemies, and his electric whip destroys their energy cores, but he can also punch them up close to collect their cores and replenish his sub-weapon system's energy. In addition, the game features a basic sub-weapon system. One other mechanic is a zip-line which allows the player to move vertically, horizontally and diagonally between elements or platforms. The game equips the player with an 8-way electric whip, along with a jump, double jump, and a short dodge slide. Steel Assault is a fast-paced 2D action platformer. Using our ocean and iceberg visual, the dark web would be the bottom tip of the submerged iceberg. Significantly smaller than the tiny surface web, the dark web is considered a part of the deep web. The dark web refers to sites that are not indexed and only accessible via specialized web browsers. Deep web sites may be concealed behind passwords or other security walls, while others simply tell search engines to not “crawl” them. While many news outlets use "deep web" and "dark web" interchangeably, much of the deep portion as a whole is perfectly legal and safe. This deep web also includes the portion that we know as the dark web. Everything else, from academic journals to private databases and more illicit content, is out of reach. In fact, this hidden web is so large that it's impossible to discover exactly how many pages or websites are active at any one time.Ĭarrying on with the analogy, big search engines could be considered like fishing boats that can only "catch" websites close to the surface. This would be the part of an iceberg beneath the water, much larger than the surface web. The deep web rests below the surface and accounts for approximately 90% of all websites. Locating surface web websites is possible because search engines can index the web via visible links (a process called “crawling” due to the search engine traveling the web like a spider). Websites are usually labeled with registry operators like “.com” and “.org” and can be easily located with popular search engines. From a statistical standpoint, this collective of websites and data makes up under 5% of the total internet.Īll commonly public-facing websites accessed via traditional browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox are contained here. If we continue to visualize the entire web like an iceberg, the open web would be the top portion that’s above the water. The open web, or surface web, is the “visible” surface layer. There are several terms surrounding the non-visible Web, but it's worth knowing how they differ if you're planning to browse off the beaten path. But the so-called "visible" Internet (aka surface web or open web) - sites that can be found using search engines like Google and Yahoo - is just the tip of the iceberg. The Internet is sizable with millions of web pages, databases, and servers all run 24 hours a day. What is the dark web, deep web, and surface web? While some use it to evade government censorship, it has also been known to be utilized for highly illegal activity. It is used for keeping internet activity anonymous and private, which can be helpful in both legal and illegal applications. The dark web is the hidden collective of internet sites only accessible by a specialized web browser. The final stock value can then be distributed across the most recent stock in movement records to assign a date as to when this stock was received (based on a FIFO - first in first out methodology).
